City of La Puente Awards Three Year Contract to Southland Transit

La Puente, CA (July 26, 2022) – The La Puente City Council voted unanimously last night to approve a 2.3 million dollar contract for Southland Transit, Inc. (STI) to continue operating its Link Shuttle and Dial-A-Ride services for three (3) years, beginning July 2022. The contract may be extended for two (2) additional years.

STI has operated the City’s contracted transit services since the company’s inception in 2001. Under the new agreement, STI will continue to operate services from its San Gabriel Valley based headquarters. The Company will be responsible for all aspects of dispatching, operations and vehicle maintenance. Services will be provided utilizing a fleet of 5 ADA accessible minibuses.

About La Puente Transit Services

The City provides two transit services to the residents of the City, operated by Southland Transit.

The La Puente Link offers hourly fixed-route shuttle service as part of two routes within the City at a cost of only $.50 cents per ride ($.25 cents for seniors and disabled). Shuttle stops are conveniently located along the route on both sides of the street and all shuttle vehicles are wheelchair accessible. The Link shuttle operates seven days a week, except holidays, using two dedicated shuttle buses, and a dedicated back up shuttle bus. The Link ridership is currently approximately 7,190 passenger trips monthly.

The La Puente Dial-a-Ride is open to senior citizens or residents with disabilities and provides curb-to-curb advance reservation para-transit service for $.25 cents a ride anywhere within the City limits and up to three miles outside the City for medical related appointments. It is available Monday through Friday and operates from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 PM. Operation of the Dial-a-Ride service is with one dedicated shuttle bus and a backup bus, as needed (provided by Southland). At present, the service generates approximately 92 passenger trips per month.

About the City of La Puente

Located 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley, the community of La Puente is predominantly residential and home to over 40,000 residents. Freeway access to the City is readily available from the 10 Interstate and 60 Freeway.

The City’s name “La Puente” means the bridge in old Spanish and refers to an early bridge built across the San Jose Creek by members of the Portola-Serra expedition in 1769, as they surveyed the region for Spain. A modernized version of the bridge can be seen in the City’s colorful seal. The community of La Puente began in 1841 when European settlers arrived by wagon train from New Mexico and obtained title to the large 48,000 acre Rancho La Puente. During the 1930’s, the area was famous for its fruit and walnut groves. The largest walnut packing plant in the world was located in the City.

Today, the City of La Puente is approximately 3.48 square miles and is home to approximately 40,000 people. It is primarily a residential community (70%) with multiple types of businesses located primarily along major highways and streets. Industrial land use is less than five percent (5%) of the City’s 3.5 square mile land area. The City’s rural community is preserved by a well-defined general plan.
