El Monte, CA (March 2, 2022) – The El Monte City Council voted unanimously last night to approve an 11 million dollar contract for Southland Transit, Inc. (STI) to continue operating its Trolley and Dial-A-Ride services for five (5) years, beginning July 2022. The contract may be extended for three (3) additional years.
STI has operated the City’s contracted transit services since the company’s inception in 2001. Under the new agreement, STI will continue to operate services from its headquarters, also located in the City of El Monte. The Company will be responsible for all aspects of dispatching, operations and maintenance, and for providing technologies that increase system efficiency and enhance rider experience. Services will be provided utilizing a fleet of 7 low floor clean fuel transit coaches and 6 ADA accessible vans.

The City of El Monte began providing local Fixed-Route transit services in 1988 and paratransit services in 1989. In December 2014, the City introduced Sunday Fixed-Route service. Fixed-Route Transit operations include five (5) routes (Red, Blue, Yellow, Green and Orange) serving the City. The City’s Dial-A-Ride paratransit program is currently a demand-response system serving the residents of the City with curb-to-curb transportation service. Service is available to El Monte residents who are at least 55 years of age or disabled residents of any age. These programs are currently funded with Prop A Local Return funds.
Located approximately 12 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, El Monte is the hub of the San Gabriel Valley, where two major freeways - Interstates 605 and 10 - intersect and is the ninth largest city (out of 88) in Los Angeles County with a population of approximately 120,000. The land uses within its 10 square mile area are 58% residential, 11% retail, 10% industrial, 7% office/retail, and 14% other of amenities. El Monte also has an ethnically diverse and dynamic population with 72% Hispanic, 18% Asian, and 7% White.
